Spend a Day in Cairo, NY: Coffee, Good Food & Local Finds

Just a few minutes from Bear House Catskills, Cairo is worth making time for during your stay. Spend a morning browsing Main Street, pick up something delicious for later, or linger over lunch before heading out to explore.

Here’s how we’d spend a day enjoying the town and its surroundings.

Start with coffee and something freshly baked

Begin your morning at Red Star Cafe & Bakery with coffee, a pastry, and a little time to ease into the day.

See & Be Kitchen is another option for breakfast or fresh artisan bread. Pick up a loaf to bring back to Bear House for a leisurely breakfast the next morning.

Take your time on Main Street

Leave room in your plans for a wander. Browse local shops, stop wherever catches your eye, and enjoy getting to know the town beyond the route to the mountains.

At Better Days Bookshop, choose your next vacation read. Back at Bear House, you’ll have plenty of places to settle in with it, whether beside the pond or curled up indoors.

For a little something extra, stop at Karen’s Flower Shoppe. Fresh flowers are a lovely way to mark a birthday, celebrate a weekend away, or simply make the dining table feel special.

Stay for lunch or bring dinner home

For pizza, pasta, wings, and hearty Italian favorites, Mateo’s Pizza is one of our go-to recommendations. We especially love the shrimp parm. Mateo’s also delivers to Bear House Catskills, a welcome option when you’d rather spend the evening enjoying the house. Check directly with the restaurant for current delivery hours.

If you’re in the mood for craft beer and pub fare, try Old Factory Brewing Company on Main Street.

Red Rooster holds some particularly happy memories for us. We’ve celebrated a birthday or two there, complete with the owner’s children serenading us tableside. That personal touch made those evenings feel special, and it’s part of what we love about spending time here.

Save room for a treat

Stop at Delightful Bites by Nina for something sweet. Pick up baked goods to enjoy along the way, or save them for dessert back at Bear House.

There’s a lot to be said for having a treat waiting after a day outdoors.

Head out for an afternoon adventure

Make Cairo part of a day exploring the surrounding Catskills. Depending on the season and how far you’d like to venture, consider:

  • Kaaterskill Falls for a waterfall outing.
  • North-South Lake for time outdoors and mountain scenery.
  • Windham Mountain or Hunter Mountain for a winter mountain day.
  • Catskill Creek for a change of scenery by the water.
  • A scenic drive along the area’s back roads, with time to stop along the way.

Choose one outing and give yourself time to enjoy it. You don’t need to fit everything into a single afternoon.

Pick up something local

On your way back, stop at an area farm market for whatever is in season. Fresh produce, maple syrup, or baked goods can become part of dinner or a little reminder of your trip to take home.

Come home to Bear House

After a day out, settle into an evening at Bear House Catskills. Enjoy your local finds, open your new book, or head outside for a soak in the hot tub.

When conditions allow, gather around the fire pit and spend a little more time together before calling it a night.

Plan your Cairo getaway

Whether you’re coming for hiking, skiing, fall foliage, or a few quiet days away, Bear House Catskills gives you a place to settle in and explore at your own pace.

Check availability and find a weekend to make your own.
