Bear House Catskills

Luxe Mountain Retreat

The Dog-Friendly Catskills Guide

Mountain walks, afternoons together and a place where dogs stay free.

A getaway is better when your dog can come along. At Bear House Catskills, dogs are welcome, and they stay free. No pet fees.

Set on almost two acres in Cairo, New York, our three-bedroom retreat makes it easy to spend time together, including with your four-legged family member. Think morning walks around the grounds, afternoons exploring the Catskills and evenings getting comfortable beside the fireplace.

You don’t need an itinerary packed with activities. A good walk, a leisurely lunch and somewhere welcoming to come home to can be all it takes.

Start With a Slow Morning at Bear House

Before heading out, take your coffee outside and enjoy a little time around the grounds with your dog.

Watch for birds around the private, spring-fed pond, listen to the sounds of the trees and let the day begin at its own pace. With room to enjoy the outdoors right at the house, every outing doesn’t have to start with a car ride.

Later, settle in for board games, put on a record or gather with friends and family by the indoor wood-burning fireplace, your dog close by.

Walks & Outdoor Adventures

Windham Path | Windham

For a relaxed outing, consider Windham Path, a 1.5-mile loop through fields and woodland, with bridges and mountain views along the way.

Dogs are welcome on a leash. It’s a lovely option when you want fresh air and scenery without planning a full hiking day.

Pair your walk with a drive through Windham, then head back to Bear House for lunch and an easy afternoon.

North-South Lake Area | Haines Falls

For a longer outdoor adventure, research the hiking routes around North-South Lake and choose one that suits both you and your dog.

Pet access varies within the campground and recreation areas, so confirm that your planned route permits dogs before visiting. Bring proof of a current rabies vaccination and follow posted leash requirements.

Considering Kaaterskill Falls?

If Kaaterskill Falls is on your list, research current access, trail conditions and pet guidance before deciding whether to bring your dog.

Waterfall outings can involve steep terrain, stairs and busy paths. Choose a route that matches your dog’s fitness and comfort, and give yourself permission to choose an easier walk instead.

Paws & Pints

A brewery stop can be a pleasant way to round out an afternoon. Two places to look into when planning your outing are:

Old Factory Brewing Company | Cairo

Consider a stop at Old Factory Brewing Company during an afternoon in Cairo.

Before bringing your dog, confirm the current pet policy and which seating areas welcome canine guests, particularly if you’re counting on indoor seating in colder weather.

West Kill Brewing | West Kill

If your plans take you farther into the mountains, consider West Kill Brewing as part of a scenic drive.

Check current hours, dog access and outdoor seating arrangements before making the trip.

Make Time for the House, Too

One of the pleasures of staying at Bear House is having somewhere comfortable to spend the rest of the day.

Prepare dinner in the fully equipped kitchen or cook outside on the propane grill, with propane provided. Gather around the outdoor fire pit, challenge someone to ping pong in the basement playroom, or choose a board game for an evening together.

With three bedrooms on the same level as the main living spaces, plus two full bathrooms and a half bathroom, your group has room to settle in. Heat and air conditioning keep the house comfortable through the seasons.

And when the kids are tucked into bed, the grown-ups can enjoy another conversation by the indoor fireplace, with the family dog nearby.

A Few Things to Pack

A little preparation makes outings easier:

  • Your dog’s usual food, treats and medications.
  • A leash, waste bags and a portable water bowl.
  • Fresh water for walks and car trips.
  • A familiar bed or blanket for settling in.
  • Proof of current rabies vaccination for destinations that require it.

We provide dog towels in the laundry room for drying off after outdoor adventures.

Follow each destination’s posted pet rules and confirm restaurant and brewery policies before heading out.

Local Veterinary Care

Catskill Animal Hospital

Call ahead to confirm availability and whether the practice can see your pet. This is a local veterinary practice, rather than a 24-hour emergency hospital. For urgent needs outside office hours, contact an open emergency veterinary hospital directly.
